Follow-up Comment #3, bug #37338 (project octave):
You can do an "informal ugrade" by simply downloading textscan.m, textread.m
and strread.m and copying them over the files in /usr/share/octave/3.6.2/m/io
Not officially recommended of course.
If you do this and ever report more bugs in those files, be sure to mention
this!
