Follow-up Comment #1:

Try with small caps ('whitespace') and report back, pls.
textscan's / strread's / textread's parameters are case-sensitive.

BTW having a "literal' ';' between the format conversion specifiers and at the
same time declaring it as whitespace may lead to unpredictable results. What
does Matlab return?

Also note that your first line will come out differently from the rest. Use
'headerlines' parameter? delimiters will implicitly be ' \n' (space &
newline)

The fmt echo is stray, I'll look into this.
