Follow-up Comment #1:

Octave was not allocating sufficient memory when using the GESDD driver.  I've
fixed the problem on the stable and development branches.  In order to see the
fix you will need to build from Mercurial sources or wait until the next
release of Octave (3.6.4 or 3.8.0).
