Follow-up Comment #1:
Confirmed on a recent development tip. The problem is common to any of the
XXXlatex drivers incrluding 'pslatex' and 'epslatex'. Given that printing to
pdf by itself works (colorbar (); print -dpdf colorbar.pdf), this is something
with that family of output drivers.
Also, of note is that the drivers behave differently even in the same family.
I found 'epslatex' to produce output as long as the location of the colorbar
was not 'EastOutside' or 'NorthOutside'. 'pdflatex' was consistently wrong in
in its results.
