Follow-up Comment #4, bug #34861 (project octave):

I was about to apply your fix, but then I realised that this basically
invalidates the need for octave_mex_list completely, since you removed the
only two places where this is used. Wouldn't it make more sense to change the
octave_shlib_list::append call to octave_mex_file_list::append instead?

Alternatively, perhaps there is no need to keep two separate lists of shlibs
at all, so perhaps it does make sense to completely get rid of the
octave_mex_file_list singleton.
