Details:

sound.m in audio package tries to deduce whether octave is being run locally
from the DISPLAY variable.  In my system, this is prefixed with a path to a
unix domain socket (DISPLAY=/tmp/launch-LwQmV8/org.macosforge.xquartz:0). 
With the attached patch, sound.m understands absolute file system paths.
