Sorry that these patches fell through the cracks. Ed, I tried looking at
yours, but it doesn't apply against the current sources anymore. Dan, your
patch could work, but the commit message needs to be cleaned up. Overall, I do
like the approach about fixing checking for real and imaginary parts.

Can you two agree on an updated patch, and I'll apply it?
