Follow-up Comment #2, bug #38694 (project octave):

Spaces are handled correctly in the dev version but the use of the tilde '~'
was not.  I corrected that in this changeset
(http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/d4ce14c19c2c).  You can either
apply the changeset manually or wait until the next major release of Octave.
