Follow-up Comment #29, bug #37290 (project octave):

Yes, I just figured that out by trying:

>> set(0, "defaultaxeslinewidth", 2.3)
>> plot(1:50)

Small problem here:

>> set(gca, "defaultlinewidth", 2.3)
error: invalid line property 'width'
>> set(gca, "linewidth", 2.3)

OK, I understand it now.
