Follow-up Comment #4, bug #34843 (project octave):

Is the original datafile which shows problems still available?  The 'load'
function has been made more compatible with undocumented Matlab features and
it may be able to parse the file now.  Unfortunately the link mentioned in the
bug report seems to be dead now.
