Follow-up Comment #1, bug #39642 (project octave): More investigations suggest this is a problem with gnuplot and/or gnuplot/octave interface. The original bug report was with gnuplot Version: 4.4.3-0ubuntu3 in ununtu 12.04. Downgrading gnuplot to 4.2.6-1 (Lucid version) seems to avoid this bug.
