I definitely think that your preference is the correct choice.
No one benefits from blindly copying Matlab errors.  If the
logic of foloowing Matlab errors is to be followed I should
file a substantial number of bug reports so that more errors
can be introduced into Octave.

If others, including John and Jordi and Rik agree that more errors
should be introduced, I will go ahead.  Other wise,  circ
should be  circ as defined in TeX and as expected.
