Follow-up Comment #21, bug #39822 (project octave):

To answer Philip, yes, it's different to run ./run-octave and start octave
from the Windows start menu. The former will have TERM variable defined, while
the latter will not.

I suppose the closest way to use ./run-octave in a way similar to the start
menu is like (untested):

env -u TERM ./run-octave
