Follow-up Comment #6, bug #40064 (project octave):

If I'm right in my reasoning, changing the default interpreter value of the
axes object won't solve everything. You could still create the axes object,
then set "interpreter" to "none", then create the legend. The text objects in
the legend will still use "tex", while the axes is using "none".
