Follow-up Comment #3:

I wonder if you don't have cruft in your system.  Could you try an 'hg clone'
to a brand new directory, and then bootstrap, configure, make, 'make test'?

I can run 'test median' and everything passes just fine.  But, I have also
been running 'make maintainer-clean' and the whole bootstrap cycle because I
have been fiddling with the Autotools stuff.
