Follow-up Comment #53, bug #40436 (project octave):

The tradeoff is between inconvenience for users who are stuck with this broken
version of gcc and the maintenance burden on Octave to carry this fix for some
period of time and any unforeseen problems that may arise.

I'm with Rik for declaring this to be a gcc bug that needs to be fixed by
gcc/distributions/sysadmins, and maybe we make configure abort if it detects
this version of gcc, but even provide an option to override the check if the
user is certain that their gcc has been patched. For a similar example, see
the configure.ac in this project I also work with:

http://git.infradead.org/users/dwmw2/openconnect.git/blob/HEAD:/configure.ac#l421

This will affect me personally, it's not only Fedora, since my Debian dev
system is also using gcc 4.8.2 as the default compiler now, so I will have to
work around this myself for the time being. I consider that an acceptable cost
for riding the bleeding edge, which is what Fedora always seems to be doing.
