Details:

when running 3.7.7+ on OSX Mavericks, if I open the preferences dialog I see a
spinning beach ball and Octave remains blocked,
I can only unblock it by killing both "octave" and "octave-gui".

I don't know what other info I could provide to help debug this as Octave does
not really crash, just remains idle, so I don't get a crash report.
