Follow-up Comment #1, bug #40759 (project octave): I don't think the behavior is inconsistent. If the user wants to "save as" an edited file into the same file then there is a real chance that this is done by accident. If you really want to save into exactly the same file you would use "save". Saving into a different file that has the same name but is in another directory is okay because you do not risk to overwrite the original file by accident.
