Details:

I use Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. The behavior happens with the Unity desktop as well as
with the Gnome desktop.

This behavior happend with the current octave-3.8.0-rc2. I downloaded it and
compiled it with no changes in the presets.

I have not made any changes to the Gui options.

Here is how to reproduce the behavior:

* Start the gui with "octave-3.8.0-rc2 --force-gui"
* Type "figure" into the terminal and press enter.
* A figure window will open and the window focus switches
to this new figure windos. That's allright.
* Now click back into the terminal part of the octave GUI.
* type some letters --> The letters will NOT appear in the
terminal, because the window focus has not switched back :(

This behavior happens as well with the editor part of the GUI instead of the
terminal part.

The only way I found the "reconquer" the focus, is to click onto the "editor"
tab and than on the "terminal" tab of the gui. Then the focus will eventually
jump back to the terminal.

This is a very annoying behavior, because it keeps me from effectivly using
the gui. After each command which generates a plot (most of my scripts will do
this!) I need several clicks to be able to continue my work in the editor or
command window.
