Follow-up Comment #1, bug #41082 (project octave):

You might start by checking that JAVA_HOME points to the JDK installation and
not the JRE installation.

Next, try executing the line that is failing manually at a terminal prompt.


cd scripts/java
javac -verbose -source 1.3 -target 1.3 -d /tmp/SBo/octave-3.8.0/scripts/java
org/octave/ClassHelper.java


Hopefully by adding the "-verbose" option it will spit out something that
makes it possible to debug this.

I'm using openjdk 7u25 on Mint and it works fine.
