Follow-up Comment #21:

I combined my patch and John's and it seems to be compatible with Matlab now. 
I pushed the changeset to the gui-release branche here
(http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/bc139ccccef9).

Octave still doesn't support the 'echo on function_name' syntax.  A new
feature request could be opened for it if desired, but the existing support
seems good enough for now.
