Follow-up Comment #13, bug #41124 (project octave):

In mac terminal preference you can set "Use option as meta key". By default
this preference is unchecked and you have to use ESC key to emulate META.

In some sense the two bugs are related: those who want option key for
character input won't be able to use it as META to search history.
