Follow-up Comment #3:

Another case of X errors appearing in the command window was reported to me. 
The errors looked like this:


Xlib:  extension "SYNC" missing on display "localhost:10.0".


and were only happening over ssh connections.  I found that they could be
avoided by setting the ssh option "ForwardX11Trusted" to "yes".  It was
sufficient to set that on the ssh command line with


-o "ForwardX11Trusted yes"
