Details:
Yes, if you can believe it, the 'k' key is non functional in both the GUI and
CLI versions of the OS/X binary distribution for Mavericks (OS/X 10.9.2).
Also though the arrow keys for command line editing work in the CLI version,
they do not in the GUI version.
This may be related to
bug #41124: Some keyboard layouts cannot input characters
But I didn't see anything there about the 'k' key
Some discussion says that setting the keyboard type helps. How does one do
that?
