Rik, I understand superficially what you wrote regarding Matlab compatibility.
 But once I think about it in more detail, I can't see any compatibility issue
in either direction (Matlab script running on Octave or the other way 'round)
that is going to be improved by the patch which sets the legend default
interpreter based on DefaultTextInterpreter.

The further I think it thru, the more it seems that that patch will create
quite a few painful side effects, especially in the area of documentation, and
will simply move the compatibility issue from one place to another.  

But rather than blabbing about it in detail here though, let me just ask if
you could post very briefly about which direction the compatibility issue
exists, and perhaps a 2-3 line minimal example that illustrates the issue. 
I'll take it from there and try to understand it better, before saying any
more.  Probably I'm simply not appreciating some aspect of the compatibility
issue, and the example will show it up.
