I'm using debian and after installing the dependencies with apt-get or
aptitude it boils down to

hg clone http://www.octave.org/hg/octave octave-src
cd octave-src && ./bootstrap && cd ..
mkdir build_octave && cd build_octave
../octave-src/configure
make -j6
make check
sudo make install
