Details:
Some of the simple predicate tests, such as isscalar() or isvector(), are used
abundantly during the input validation section of most m-file functions. It
would be beneficial to have a C++ implementation, rather than an m-file one,
to avoid interpreter overhead.
isscalar has already been coded in this patch
(https://savannah.gnu.org/patch/?8093). The author reports a 4X speed
improvement.
