Follow-up Comment #5, bug #42450 (project octave):
I don't know, but you can try avoiding any graphics initialization to see if
Octave starts that way, try
DISPLAY= octave --no-window-system
It could be possible that nvidia's libraries are interfering somehow, I don't
have a Ubuntu 14.04 with nvidia to test that combination.
