Follow-up Comment #10:

@Falk: jwe added the gnulib module for log2 to Octave
(http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/ff4da3c8ed16).  Can you try
compiling from Mercurial source code and see if the problem has gone away? 
The change was made on the stable branch which will become 3.8.2 fairly soon.
