Follow-up Comment #2, bug #42720 (project octave):
One important change as a result of moving doc/icons into etc would be that it
no longer has its own Makefile.am. Files in etc are currently handled by the
top-level Makefile.am. Also consider my proposed patch to build icons from
source in doc/icons/Makefile.am, see bug #37062 (which I keep meaning to bring
to the maintainers list to get some attention).
Maybe a new top-level directory instead, either desktop or icons?
A different solution would be to put more fine-grained controls over which
specific rules under doc can't be performed with --disable-docs. This is also
a prerequisite to moving towards a completely non-recursive Automake build
(which I'm hoping to take a look at someday).
