Follow-up Comment #8, bug #43003 (project octave):

I'm curious to know whether you really need 64-bit indexing.  Do you really do
computations with arrays that have more than 2e9 elements?

In any case, you might want to look at the way the mxe-octave build system
builds Octave and dependencies for 64-bit indexing.

mxe-octave can be used to build nearly all dependencies, but if you need only
some of them (because your OS provides most as packages, for example) you
could still use it to build individual dependencies, or at least examine what
is done for building with 64-bit indexing by looking at the makefile fragments
in the mxe-octave src directory.
