Follow-up Comment #6, bug #43340 (project octave): The gnuplot binary shipping with the 3.8.0 binary supports only the qt terminal, other terminal types are disbled. The launch script makes sure that qt terminal is selected before starting Octave so I am (partly) surprised you are seeing that error about aquaterm: indeed aquaterm is neither installed not configured to work, but unless you manually set GNUTERM=aqua it should never be invoked.
