@Anonym: Thank you for the hint. On Jessie my driver in
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri was indeed clinked against libLLVM-3.5.so.1
whereas ./configure picked LLVM 3.4 for Octave.
Closing as invalid
