Follow-up Comment #31, bug #38928 (project octave): It would be great to make it work without having to specify those options, but I don't see any justification for searching for -lhdf5_serial (or whatever it is called) over any other library name other than just -lhdf5. So I don't know how to solve this problem without introducing cruft in the configure script that is specific to the Debian naming scheme. But maybe we should do that?
