Fot the icon, can you try changing the makeinst-script.sh ICON line to:

ICON=`find $OCTAVE_SOURCE -name octave-logo.ico -printf "%P\n" | 
head -1 | sed 's,/,\\\\,g'`


(Added \n in the printf)
