Follow-up Comment #1:
Confirmed.
W/o Excel or Java-based support libs there's only .xlsx, .ods and .gnumeric.
Agreed, one can argue about the documentation and the error messages, but
there's simply no .xls I/O support without external dependencies. Unless
someone finds a Java/COM/whatever-less substitute that can be implemented in
Octave.
I'll fix the docs & messages but that's about all I can do.
