Thanks for the additional information. This does not look correct to me. There
should be no images in your source tree if you are doing an out-of-tree build
from a mercurial clone. Did you build in-source-tree at one point, try to
clean up from there, and then do an out-of-tree build?
The build rules in this case could be made to work slightly more reliably, but
it's a pretty low priority because the common cases do work fine.
Try deleting all *.png files in your source tree's doc/interpreter directory
and see if the build finishes correctly. You should end up with the png files
in your build tree doc/interpreter instead, and then the cp command should not
error.
