Follow-up Comment #3:

The underlying problem of having a null ("") graphics toolkit has been fixed
in the development code that is about to become the 4.0 release.  For the time
being, I would just put the line


graphics_toolkit ("gnuplot");


in your .octaverc file so that it is always set at start-up.
