Follow-up Comment #7, bug #44333 (project octave):

I tried make distcheck and it failed because of trying to write to the source
tree.  The problem was the generated .mk makefile fragments that are used in a
few places.  I've been thinking about how to fix this problem but I don't see
an easy solution.
