Follow-up Comment #5, bug #44391 (project octave):

I think that problem is solved with pattern rules in GNU Make:

Unfortunately, automake doesn't generate pattern rules and I don't know that
it is worth overriding the built-in rule from automake for this purpose.

I guess the longer term solution is to fix automake to (optionally) take
advantage of GNU Make features.
