Follow-up Comment #1, bug #44404 (project octave):

The usual thing would be to add a clean-local rule that removed the extra
files.  But, we don't want to remove someone's mimeinfo.cache if it contains
other entries besides just Octave.

Is this a rule that belongs with the distribution maintainer, like Debian,
rather than with the individual software package?

I think maybe the distribution takes care of re-building global cache files,
updating ramdisks, etc.
