Follow-up Comment #2, bug #44458 (project octave):

I don't know how to work with the patch mentioned for another bug report. In
the meanwhile, I was able to get it working by going back to the gnuplot 4.6
(instead of version 5.0) in my MacPorts installation:

  svn co -r 128085
http://svn.macports.org/repository/macports/trunk/dports/math/gnuplot
  cd gnuplot/
  sudo port install

Plotting and print(...) now seems to work as desired for me.
