Follow-up Comment #48, bug #42534 (project octave):

I have just tested 4.0-RC1, and it doesn't fix the problem. Note that the code
by Helios does not always produce the bug (although it often does).

Here is a specific instance that always produces the bug (attached is the
resulting image):
