Follow-up Comment #30:

I pushed a cset that at least will restore the original working directory when
the test fails (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/ee7159d9a330). 
That was the original bug title.

I've re-titled to reflect the remaining problem.
