Follow-up Comment #6, bug #44765 (project octave): Got it. Before drawing any axes, Octave clears the GL_DEPTH_BUFFER (see opengl_renderer::setup_opengl_transformation), so that subsequent objects are drawn over previous ones. Commenting out this line makes on-screen rendering look like the ps file.
