Follow-up Comment #9, bug #45231 (project octave):

Thanks for jumping in Philip, I was looking at the changes you had made
previously with make_absolute_filename, e.g.
http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/0cc52d752f99, and thought that
would be the right fix here too, but I'm not familiar with the details of all
of these various functions.
