Follow-up Comment #18, bug #42838 (project octave):

Mike: I agree that the problem is with the gnuplot
black fill. And, gnuplot 5 generates it and gnuplot
4, for the same input, does not.
The real question is how to fix it. The web page mentioned
in bug report #37273 suggested that an input change
would turn off the black fill. Obviously, it is possible
to generate plots using gnuplot 5 with no black fill.

I took a quick look on the gnuplot website but did not
see any mention of this as a known bug.

I am really short of time right now and leaving on a trip
in the morning. But, checking if there really is a
workaround would be worth a bit of time. If that fails,
a bug report to gnuplot. (Or both!)
