Thank you very much for the bug report. I have incorporated your changes in
netcdf 1.0.7.

I have prepared a release candidate for octcdf with similar changes
(attached). Can you check if it works?

Sorry for my late response. I would be great if the package maintainer would
get automatic notification for bug reports.
