Follow-up Comment #19, bug #45488 (project octave):

Rik,

Here are:
1. the cset (qt_manual.plot.diff) against the current default
   There are a few lines at the end which I do not understand.
   I did not intend to change anything there and they do not
   seem to do anything.

2. the two edited files: plot.txi and plotimages.m

This correctly generated the Manual. In particular Figure 15.7
seems as intended and shows LaTeX capability.

I quickly tried open("extended.pdf") in my system but
it did not seem to work. I am probably missing some
configuration??  I will check later. Your idea is definitely the
right thing to do.

Anything else I can do?
