Follow-up Comment #1:

Thanks for your bug report. Confirmed here, the scripts attempt to determine
if the file argument has a file extension by searching for the last ".", which
breaks in this case.

This is a pretty minor issue with an easy workaround, simply add a valid file
extension to the name, ".tex" for the case of "pdflatex", and there is no
error.

This probably needs to be fixed in the gnuplot scripts as well.
